I was sitting at the bar in my club when I first heard the unforgettable sounds of Bassnectar. For those of you who don’t know who Bassnectar is; he is a DJ and record producer known for playing the genres of music called dubstep & electronica. If you don’t know what dubstep or electronica is, don’t worry about it because neither did I at the time. All I knew is that I had never heard music like it before. The beat & bass were captivating and it immediately made me get up out of my seat at the bar and want to move around. I rushed over to my DJ who was playing the set and demanded to know what kind of music this was and why have I never heard of it. Even he was a little clueless to the sounds and told me to talk to the girl on stage who brought the CD in for him to play. So as soon as she stepped down off main stage I bombarded the girl with 21 questions about the DJ. I could tell she was a little taken back; I was the owner of the club she worked in and we had never spoken before and now I was firing away with excitement about the music she had just introduced me to. I don’t even think I let her get a word in those first few minutes because I don’t remember her answering a single one of my questions. I just remember her saying, “I’ll bring you in a copy next time I work.”
A few days later the girl came back to the club and like she had promised she handed me a copy of her music. I glanced down at the CD and written in sharpie it read: “To David” “XOXO Molly.” It was then I realized I had never gotten her name; I guess it was Molly. On the way home that night I listened to the CD feeling hypnotized by the beat. I had never heard music that made me feel so good so I sat in my driveway listening to his songs over & over. I didn’t even know what I was listening to but I was hooked and wanted more.
I tried to find more of this kind of music online but I kept coming up short; and everyone that I talked to had no idea what dubstep was; not many people did in 2009. I knew the only way I was going to find out more about this music was to go back to the source and find the girl. I went to my club every night hoping to run into her but a few weeks passed and there was no sign of her. I had just about given up on her when I went out one night and ended up at another club and heard those captivating electronic beats of drum and bass coming from main stage. I quickly exited the VIP lounge from where I was sitting and made my way to main stage to find my gatekeeper of music, little Miss Molly. She smiled when she saw me and approached me as if she knew I needed answers. “Did you enjoy the CD,” she asked. “More,” I replied, “I want more.”
Now in that very moment I know I was only asking for music but what I didn’t know was where the music would take me. “If you want more then follow me,” she said. We left the club and she led me downtown. I didn’t mind because I went downtown almost every weekend and everyone knew me in the downtown area. But she didn’t take me to the area of downtown I normally go; she took me to an area I usually avoid. We walked down a dark alley street towards some stairs that were leading downward. As we got closer to the stairs I could start to hear the bass. As we walked down all I could think was : “where in the hell is this girl taking me and why in the hell am I following her?!” And just like that, the doors opened and all I could see what a sea of lights, lasers and people dancing to my mystery music. She had taken me to an underground rave. I looked around and couldn’t believe how intense the party was. The room was filled with a type of energy that I had never seen before. Everyone seemed to one with the music and in their own little universe. I tried to make eye contact with others but I was inexistent. “What’s wrong with everybody,” I asked. “Nothing, they’re just rolling,” she said. I didn’t know what rolling was but it didn’t look that bad. If fact, from the looks of it, everyone seemed to be having a better time than I was having. “Are we going to roll,” I finally asked. Without responding she smiled and placed a little white capsule in my mouth.
I didn’t feel anything for about 30-45 minutes but when it hit me, it hit me like a freight train. I remember standing there and leaning over about to vomit all over the dance floor. “Thats normal,” she said. “Trust me, it will pass and then you’ll feel amazing.” I hate to say it, but she was right. The nausea passed and this feeling of over-exxagerated happiness rushed through my body. I felt wonderful and free and so loving. I wanted to hug and dance with every girl in the club and since they felt the same way I did, they didn’t mind at all. I had never felt such a feeling of euphoria & passion and this new electronic music I had fallen in love with was a perfect combination to the drug.
When the party ended and the club doors opened I stepped outside to find that it was already morning. My body was still tingling from the drug and I secretly remember wanting more even though the party was over. “What was that we took?” “Molly,” she replied. I stood there for a second very confused. Why was Molly saying we took Molly?! I decided to ask the question again…”What were the pills we took called?” “I told you, Molly,” she explained. “So the pills we took were called Molly and your name is also Molly?!” She burst out into laughter, “My name is Randi.”
That was the first night I met the real Molly but definitely not the last. For the next 5 years I would have countless experiences with the drug Molly also known as MDMA. Dubstep, electronica, house & EDM became the most popular genres of music in the club scene and Molly was always there to enhance the lights, sounds and laughter of the party. But when the party was over and there was no more Molly, there was no more laughter. Happiness turned to sadness and life didn’t seem so swell anymore. Molly was a manipulator that would take feelings for a roller coaster ride of highs & lows, always making sure to leave you low. And after 5 long years of going out with Molly I had to make the decision to break up with Molly. I knew that no matter how good she made me feel in the beginning, she would always screw me over in the end.
